BUCKLE

Unique ID: LVPL-80ED9A

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

A copper alloy buckle pin of Medieval date. The object can be classified as a 'disc-on-pin' buckle pin, Type B: Central recess type, Redmayne (2014), FRG Datasheet 47.

The disc is decorated with fine grooves which radiate outwards from the central circular depression. This depression is infilled with fragments of olive green material, probably enamel. The depression measures 6.14mm in diameter. The remains of gilding are visible on some of the grooves and ridges. Projecting from one edge of the obeject is the tip of the buckle pin which measures 5.59mm in length and 3.43mm in width. The pin is D-shaped in cross-section and tapers to a complete rounded point. Projecting from the opposite edge of the object is the incomplete loop which curves backwards and would have attached the pin to the strap bar of the buckle. The rear of the object is undecorated and flat.

Notes:

Dating is still uncertain as none have been found in any stratified context, but the manufacturing methods, morphology and surface treatments all suggest a medieval date of circa AD 1300-1500, (peers comm. T. Redmayne).
