An incomplete copper-alloy pin, dating from the Roman period.
The pin has been cast in one piece and has a flattened-hemispherical head and straight shaft with circular cross section. Two grooves extend horizontally around the top of this shaft, separated from each other by a plain band; beneath these the shaft tapers towards the damaged distal end.
Length: 38.7mm; diameter of head: 7mm. Weight: 3.01g.
A published parallel for this common form of Roman pin is no. 218 from excavations at Baldock, Hertfordshire (Stead and Rigby 1986: fig. 54). The dating evidence from Baldock suggests that pins of this form date from the 2nd century onwards (ibid. 128).
