An incomplete copper alloy bow brooch of Bow-and-fantail type and of 1st to 2nd century AD date. Only a fragment of the bow and the leg is of characteristic triangular 'fantail' form survive. The surviving length is 26.59mm. The bow curves to one side, accentuated by the fact that one side has been damaged and is missing. Within the leg is a triangular panel containing a broken back scroll motif at the base with a chevron cell at its apex. These would have been infilled with enamel which is now missing.
At the rear of the brooch the catchplate has been folded over and a fragment of pin remains within the catchplate. The catchplate measures 12.56mm in length. The object has a dark green patina with adhering traces of black in places.
The brooch can be closely paralleled with an example recorded by Hattatt (1985, no. 461, p. 117-8)[1] from Owmby, Lincolnshire with the same motif but in red enamel. Hattatt states the brooch is of Hull's type 36 and parallels it to a further example in the British Museum. A similar example which can be found on the database is Domscheit, W (2014) NMGW-C9D4E0: A ROMAN BOW BROOCH Web page available at: https://finds.org.uk/database/artefacts/record/id/652736.
