A base silver radiate of Postumus, dating to the period AD 260-269 (Reece period 13). HERC(VLI) DEVSONIENSI reverse depicting Hercules standing right, leaning on club and holding bow and lion's skin. Uncertain Gallic mint. This coin has two piercings, located at 11 and 12 o'clock on the obverse and indicating reuse as jewellery, possibly in the Early-Medieval period.
Diameter: 22.4mm; thickness: 1.7mm. Weight: 2.25g.
Notes:
The British Museum clarified its advice on modified coins in April 2017. Single precious metal coins from the Iron Age to AD 1180 which have been modified in any way, including by a single piercing, are now thought to fulfil the criteria for Treasure because they should be regarded as single precious metal objects. This item was recorded before the advice was clarified, otherwise it would have been reported as potential Treasure.
