A Roman copper-alloy lock-pin head.

The lower portion of the head is sub-cylindrical and there is a conical projection at the centre of the upper surface. A recessed band extends around the perimeter of the head, with a parallel groove above and a right-angled rim at the base. A scalloped rim extends around the top, and a moulded ring surrounds the central cone. Iron corrosion is contained within a sub-rectangular socket, located at the centre of the flat underside; this represents the point at which the iron shaft was originally attached.

Diameter: 25.6mm; height: 20.4mm. Weight: 30.66g.

Similar lock-pins were found in excavations at Colchester (Crummy 1983: 124-125). For other examples on the PAS database, see BH-2166E6 and BH-05F497.
