FINGER RING

Unique ID: SOM-560893

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Published Find published

A Roman copper-alloy finger ring of Henig Type IX (Henig 1974, fig.1), Guiraud type 9a. The hoop is polygonal in plan with eight external facets (octagonal), although the inside surface is circular in shape. The facets are slightly irregular in length. Each facet is flat and plain and there is no sign of any surface treatment, however the ring is very worn with damaged sections. Diameter: 21.3mm expernally, width: 3.5mm, thickness: 1.9mm, weight: 2.05g
Henig (1974, 50) suggests that polygonal rings are a third century type while Crummy (1983, 49, ref. 1788) notes that polygonal hoops tend to be fourth century in date. Johns (1997, 41), like Henig, suggests a slightly earlier, Middle Empire range. There are a number of similar examples recorded on the PAS database including IOW-901697 and HAMP-D47894.

Class: Henig Type IX /Guiraud type 9a
