An incomplete dripping pan of late medieval date. The fragment is a handle sherd from a Humber Ware dripping pan. The fabric is a hard-fired red/orange-sandy ware with a light olive glaze, sparsely tempered with fine sand.

The sherd is 95.1mm long, 51.6mm wide, 22.9mm thick and weighs 79g.

Variation has been noted in the fabric of Humber Ware vessels between potters from similar areas as seen in two examples of large cisterns from York. Humber ware is also notable for the variation in shapes as pottery replaces treen or wooden objects. There is however a simultaneous decrees in the number of pots used for cooking as the use of metal alternatives rises.

Medieval dripping dishes tended to be either oval or rectangular with one or two handles along one edge. They were used to collect the juices which dripped from cooking meat on a spit (Jennings, 1992, p.28).
