An incomplete cast copper alloy brooch of Colchester derivative Polden Hill (Mackreth Group 4, flat wing ends), Mackreth 2011, 4.l. Plate 48. Remains of silver plating on the surface (length: 47.2mm; width at wings: 14.5mm; thickness at wings: 17mm; weight: 8.30g). The brooch has small wings, each measuring approximately 4mm either side of the head. At either end of the semicylindrical wings, an axis bar, possibly iron, is held passing through the flat rounded lugs. Part of the spring mechanism remains with four turns visible. The pin has disappeared. There are slight appendages either side of the head with a pronounced ridge running down the top of the bow by 15mm. The slim bow becomes more narrow as it reaches the foot at the bottom. Part of the catch plate is still present. Overall, the brooch is in a poor condition with small patches of silvering occuring down the bow. There is also a large amount of corrosion behind the head, underneath the spring. The brooch has a pitted, light green patina.
