BOOK FITTING

Unique ID: BUC-B7EF37

Object type certainty: Possibly
Workflow status: Published Find published

A copper alloy fitting with three transversely perforated lugs, probably a book clasp of Howsam type A.1.2. The main part of the object consists of a beast's head, with two of the lugs springing from a flatter area across the back of the animal's head. The third comes from the snout of the creature and is perhaps itself another smaller animal head. The beast has incised curly hair on the top of the head, rather roughly moulded eyes, and a short snout. The reverse of the object is undecorated and has a depression 2.5mm in diameter.

This is the first example of a type A.1.2 clasp recorded on the PAS database.
