An incomplete copper alloy cock spur, of Late Medieval to Post Medieval dating (AD 1400 to AD 1800).
The cockspur is formed from a circular band which at one end flares into a collar. At the other end,the top part of the band extends into the prick which is oval in section, perpendicular to the band, and tapers to a blunt point.
It measures 26.8 mm in length, 15.0 mm wide and 11.3 mm thick. It weighs 1.7 g.
The cock spur is a mid to dark green, with an even surface patina. Abrasion, caused by movement whilst within the plough soil, has resulted in a loss of some of the original surface detail.
Cockspurs were originally used in cock-fighting, and would have been attached to the cockerel's leg. Several similar cock spurs have been recorded on the PAS database, including: HAMP-BCD4AC; WAW-7144B1 and WMID-A22737.
