An incomplete copper alloy La Tène III brooch, of Late Iron Age to Roman dating (100 BC to 100 AD).
Around 25% of the brooch is present, consisting of the spring and top of the bow.
The brooch is made in one piece, having a very thin, slightly arched bow (circular in cross-section) which at the head curls around on itself twice to form the spring. The upper surface of the bow is decorated towards the top with four transverse v shaped grooves.
The brooch measures 26.2 mm in length, 7.0 mm wide and 10.2 mm thick. It weighs 1.9 g.
The brooch is a mid green colour, with an even surface patina. Abrasion, caused by movement whilst within the plough soil, has resulted in the loss of some of the original surface detail.
Similar La Tène III brooches are illustrated in Hattatt (2000), p. 290, fig. 149, which he dates to the 1st Century BC/AD. A similar brooch has been recorded on the PAS database as HAMP-C9C6C6.
