An incomplete copper-alloy Colchester one-piece brooch of Roman (early to mid 1st century) date. The brooch has parallel-sided concave wings, both of which are broken; the remaining head is 18.4mm wide. From the center of the head's underside projects part of the rearward lug. Another lug projects from the upper edge of the head; both lugs terminate in broken lugs. The bow projects forward from the head then turns through 90 degrees. It has a 'D' shaped cross section and has a groove running down the length. A broken catch plate projects from the rear of the bow, it was decorated with at least 5 circular perforations, all of which are now broken. The catch plate is decorated with incised dots where the catch plate emerges from the bow.
The brooch is 61.7mm long, 16.5mm wide, 3.7mm thick and weighs 16.3 grams.
A very similar example can be seen in Hattatt, page 296 ref 251.
