A silver single cufflink element of later Post-Medieval date. The cuff link element consists of an octagonal button with slightly convex front and concave reverse with down turned edges. At the centre of the upper surface is an incised rose. The rose is shown with a circular centre with four larger semi-circular tipped lobed petals alternating with four smaller petals depicted as being behind the larger ones. Dashed incised lines form a border around the edge, 0.9mm in from the curve of the down turned rim. From the curved edge the down turned rim extends for 1.3mm. The reverse surface is undecorated but has an oval sectioned bar that forms a loop, which is soldered to the centre. The bar has a width of 1.6mm and thickness of 1.0mm that bends round to form a 'D' shaped loop. The loop has a length of 6.0mm and height of 4.4mm. The ends of the loop are soldered onto the back of the plate set apart from each other by 2.9mm.
This element weighs 1.05g, has a width of 14.5mm, height of 14.6mm and depth, including the loop, of 5.3mm.
Similar cuff link elements have been recorded on the Portable Antiquities Scheme database. For example see finds: CORN-C48BF3, IOW-6D3E94; IOW-4A7C02; IOW-942384; IOW-FBD221; LON-427394; LON-BAD6E2; SUSS-F91492 and WILT-323F27. These have all been dated from c.1720-1800.
Notes:
All of the above are considered to date from c.1720 and are less than 300 years old and therefore not classified as potential Treasure under the requirements of the Treasure Act 1996.
