An incomplete copper alloy medieval (AD c.1390-c.1420) buckle with an integral box chape, missing most of its frame and its pin. Overall, the buckle measures 44.4mm long, 25.4mm wide and 7.0mm thick. It weighs 16.8g. The box chape is roughly rectangular and has a rectangular opening at the end. Near the opening are two copper alloy rivets that would have attached it to the belt. The front face of the plate is inscribed with an 'M' in gothic/black letter script. A narrowed collar connects the box plate to the frame. At the centre of the collar is a piercing for the pin to pass through. The small part of the frame that survives is rectangular in cross-section and has an ornate outer edge. It is likely that the buckle frame was originally lyre-shaped like two examples in Whitehead (1996, pp. 37-8, nos 218-219).
