Incomplete cast copper alloy sword or dagger scabbard chape, that is a waisted keyhole chape in plan, and sub-rectangular in profile and section. At the upper edge of the chape there are two curved protrusions to hold on to the leather scabbard like claws. The chape has a rounded base with a spherical knop at its apex, and is decorated with a double scroll below a central fleur de lis in a trefoil formation, with circular petals, below a linear band of rouletting, and all within a defined linear border that follows the edge of the chape. The back plate of the chape is missing and there are areas of black lacquer on the exterior surface of the chape, which looks too dark for it to be decayed red enamel.

Ward Perkins (1993) in the London Museum Medieval Catalogue 1940 illustrates a similar example with an openwork fleur de lis in Plate LXXX, no.10, and also Type IV on page 285, fig.87, which is dated from the late 15th to the 16th century.

Read (2001) illustrates a similarly waisted chape decorated with a transverse band, trefoil and scroll, from east Devon on page 90, fig.58, no.687, which is dated from the 15th to the 16th century.
