An incomplete worn and damaged cast copper-alloy animal rumbler or 'crotal' bell of later Post Medieval date, probably c. late 18th century AD. Three quarters of the bell remain. The bell is sub-spherical and comprises of two hemispherical domes with a raised circumferential join. The top hemisphere has two circular sound holes and a sub-square suspension loop with drilled circular hole projecting from the top. The hole was drilled later into the solid cast loop suggesting it was made before the introduction of the detachable 'sprue-piece' method in the mid-17th century. The lower hemisphere is damaged at the long sound with one side missing. The lower hemisphere is possibly decorated with the 'sunburst' pattern and the upper hemisphere is undecorated. There is no remaining makers mark. The iron pea has corroded inside of the bell and ironing staining is visible in the soil filling. The bell measures 28.4mm in diameter at centre and 39.3mm high including the loop. The bell weighs 31.35 grams. Contemporary illustrations often show bells worn as sets on the harnesses of larger animals.
