A complete silver composite bi-convex hollow button, of Early Post Medieval dating (17th Century AD).

The button has been made from two domed halves soldered together, with a pair of opposing circular blow holes in the lower hemisphere. The blow holes have an internal diameter of 1.4 mm. A loop has been made from a piece of rectangular sectioned silver wire, folded in two, with the ends soldered onto the back of the button, between the two blow holes. No maker's mark is present.

The button has a head diameter of 11.1 mm and measures 14.8 mm in length. The loop is 1.5 mm wide and 4.6 mm long. It weighs 1.8 g.

The button is a light grey colour, with an even surface patina. Fine stratches are present on the surface.

Buttons of this type have been previously reported as Treasure, for example: 2003 T361 (Ashley, 2003) and 2008 T435 (Richardson and Egan, 2008). All are considered to be of 16th to 17th centuries AD dating.

Notes:

In relation to the Treasure Act (1996), the find contains a minimum of 10% silver and predates 1714. It therefore qualifies as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act (1996) in terms of precious metal content and age.
