A wall sherd from a ceramic vessel, probably of Roman date, about AD 43 - 410. The coarse fabric is a light to medium grey colour and is vesicular, with inclusions of quartz and mica. The internal and external surfaces are both dark brown / grey; the outer surface being darker than the inner, and the core is lighter grey. The texture is irregular and the feel is fairly smooth.

The sherd is either from the shoulder of a necked vessel, just below the rim, or perhaps from a lid. The vessel has a maximum diameter of about 160mm and then curves inwards and out again creating an S shaped profile. The wider end of the sherd is decorated with a single horizontal groove. The sherd is 62.6mm long, 49.3mm wide ands 15.9mm thick. It weighs 35.95gm.
