An Early Medieval Merovingian gold tremissis, dating to the 7th century. Addendum to 2010 T254.
Description: A Merovingian tremissis deriving from the first Provençal type.
Obverse description: Diademed and cuirassed bust facing right.
Obverse inscription: VIL[---]V / [---]OFVIC (the F is upside down and in retrograde)
Reverse description: Cross pattée on globe.
Reverse inscription: NO[---]OVS M[O]NI. V and II in field, either side of the cross.
The moneyer and mint are uncertain.
Dimensions: diameter: 13.67 mm; thickness: 1.01 mm; weight: 1.19g.
Notes:
The object contains a minimum of 10% precious metal and is over 300 years old. Consequently it qualifies as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996 in terms of both age and precious metal content.
