Silver sixpence of Charles I (1625-1649), Tower Mint under the King (1625-1642), mintmark triangle (1639-1640), Group F, Spink 2817. There is a large sub-square perforation within one edge of the coin, which has torn that edge, and from the size and shape of the hole and the force suggested by the raised edge on the obverse, at about 9 o'clock, it was most likely caused by having a nail driven through it. It may have been nail-bored as a consequence of measures taken during the Great Recoinage of 1696 which cites the rules that hammered monies had to be hammered through the middle with a solid punch.

Evidence of reuse: nail-bored as consequence of re-coinage
