Copper alloy brooch. bow and fantail brooch, Mackreth type CD H 7.b3. A head formed by the expansion of the D section bow bears the stubs of a top loop and a cylindrical case behind retains an axis bar and the stub of a hinged pin. The bow now appears plain, though worn and with a very marked curve, and widens below its mid point to form a triangular fantail plate. The plate is decorated with relief motifs of a lozenge from which depends an inverted pelta, with an additional downward curve between them; The ground behind these motifs is filled with dull red enamel. There is the stub of a catch plate on the back of the plate. Suggested date: Early Roman, 50-150 AD.
