A complete Early-Medieval (Anglo-Scandinavian) to Medieval copper-alloy stirrup-strap mount (1000 - 1100). Williams Class A, Type 9.

The stirrup-strap mount is broadly pentagonal in plan, convex at the front and concave at the rear. At the front the mount is moulded in the form of a forward facing human mask. The sub-oval eyes, triangular nose and straight mouth are well defined. At the top, a central lobe is pierced and contains the remains of an iron rivet. There are two other similar rivets holes close to the base, one at each side. Both of these also have the remains of iron rivets. There is a small projecting rearward flange at the base on the rear. The rear face is hollow at the centre.

This abraded mount is reddish purple with flecks of a green patina at the rear. The iron is corroded.

Height: 36.4mm; width: 30.6mm; thickness: 6.5mm. Weight: 11.82g.

Similar stirrup strap mounts have been published and illustrated (Williams 1997: 51-53, refs: 159-175).
