An incomplete copper alloy late Iron Age/ early Roman La Tène III, Nauheim derivative brooch (100 BC - AD 100). The brooch is made in one piece, with the top of the bow narrowing and curling back on itself several times to form a spring which would then extend downwards to form the pin, however several coils of the spring and the entire pin shank are missing. The brooch has a very thin, arched bow, which is D-shaped in section, being flat to the reverse. The bow narrows down to a very thin strip at the foot, to the reverse of which extends the triangular catchplate. This extends 16.6mm along the length of the foot and 8.4mm outwards. The long outer edge is curled to receive the pin. The upper surface of the bow is decorated with two vertical strips of alternating punch marks, which at the foot turn into two vertical strips of alternating transverse grooves. The metal has a dark bluey-green patina and may originally have been silvered or tinned, although no trace survives now.

The brooch is 54.7mm long, a maximum of 6.6mm wide at the spring and a minimum of 0.7mm wide at the foot. The bow is 1.8mm thick. The brooch weighs 2.92g.

Similar La Tène III brooches are illustrated in Hattatt (2000), p. 290, fig. 149, which he dates from the 1st century BC to the 1st century AD.
