An incomplete copper alloy purse bar of post-medieval date. The object has a central square block with rounded edges and a circular perforation running through the vertical axis. The remains of a shank from an attachment loop remain within the perforation as does the lower rivet which held it in place. The loop proper has been lost to an old break. The front and back panels of the block are decorated with niello cross hatching and it is flanked by moulded ridges. To either side of the block, from the moulded decoration, short circular sectioned bars extend ending in rounded terminals, each with a sub-triangular projection from the lower edge. Each terminal has a double banded border of incised lines.
The metal has a mid-green patina and is worn. The purse bar is 76.1mm long, 17.7mm wide, 10.6mm thick and weighs 37.3g.
This example fits into Williams' Class C1 and dates to the 16th century.
