A complete lead alloy artefact of uncertain function and dating, but possibly Medieval to Post Medieval in dating (AD 1400 to AD 1700).

The artefact is sub circular, with a rectangular cross section. The sides of the artefact have been faceted, with the edges folded over to create a folded rim on both the front and back. No decoration is present on either the front of back of the artefact. A rectangular perforation (hole) is located slightly off centre. This measures 8.2 mm in length and 3.3 mm wide.

It measures 29.2 mm in length, 30.8 mm wide and 11.5 mm thick. It weighs 67.1 g.

The artefact is a mid grey colour, with an even surface patina. Abrasion, caused by movement whilst within the plough soil, has resulted in a loss of some of the original surface detail.

The shape and size of the artefact are suggestive that it could have been a weight, however rectangular perforations are normally associated with the tang of a sword or blade. Therefore it is possible that this artefact is that of a pommel or similar associated artefact. A similar lead alloy artefact has been recorded on the PAS database as BERK-695327. It is reasonable to assume that these artefacts are Medieval to Post Medieval in dating, however this dating is tentative.
