A complete copper alloy needle probably dating to the Roman period, c. AD 200 to 400. The needle has a circular section and flattens towards an ovate terminal where the eye is located. The eye is circular with a groove above and below on both sides. The opposite end tapers to a worn point which has a square section. Each surface bears file marks which suggests it may have been re-sharpened in antiquity.
The metal had a mid-green patina and is worn. The needle is 71mm long, 3.9mm wide, 2.9mm thick and weighs 2.7g.
Similar examples are illustrated in Crummy (1983: p.66, fig.70, no's 1991 & 1993) from excavated contexts dated to the 3rd - 4th century AD.
