An incomplete copper alloy rim fragment from a copper alloy probable posnet or cauldron of Late Medieval to Early Post Medieval dating (AD 1400 -AD 1700).
The rim fragment is sub triangular in shape, with a sub rectangular cross section. Copper corrosion products obscure some of the interior surface, but patches of a smooth and polished surface are present. The rim type consists of a rounded lip. The exterior surface is unpolished and shows signs of finishing/filing. Sooting is present on the exterior of the fragment. This section is most likely from the out turned rim of a cauldron or posnet (See Fig 1 in Butler, Green and Payne 2009 for examples of the vessel type).
The fragment has a rim diameter of 26 cm and 7% of the rim is present. It has a length of 35.1 mm and is 52.2 mm wide. It is 4.1 mm thick. It weighs 22.7 g.
The fragment is a dark green colour, with an even surface patina. Abrasion, caused by movement whilst within the plough soil, has resulted in a loss of some of the original surface detail.
Body fragments of cast copper alloy cooking vessels are not an unusual find, but are strongly indicative of Medieval and Post Medieval activity in the area. Cooking vessels of this type were in use from as early as AD 1100 and slowly go out of use by 1850, after being superseded by cast iron pots and saucepans (Butler, Green and Payne, 2009, 1).
