A fragment of a post-Medieval copper-alloy handle from a skillet or posnet (c. 1500-c. 1650).
The fragment is sub-rectangular in plan and 'D'-shaped in cross-section. It tapers in width and thickness along its length. The upper flat face is decorated with a moulded geometric design. The design consists of a saltire cross in relief at one end with adjacent chevrons and triangles in relief. There is a plain border at each edge. The convex underside is bevelled along each edge with a quatrefoil-like protrusion. The narrower end is complete and there is an oblique break at the wider end.
This handle has a smooth olive green patina.
Length: 69.6mm; width at wider end: 22.4mm; width at narrower end: 20.3mm; thickness: 12.4mm. Weight: 85.58g.
Handles of this style are typically found on posnets and skillets. A posnet is a small cauldron with handle and a skillet is a saucepan with three legs. As it is straight and not curved, it is more probable that it came from a skillet rather than a posnet.
