BROOCH

Unique ID: SOMDOR-37E553

Object type certainty: Certain

An incomplete copper-alloy plate brooch of Roman date with a glass central boss. The surviving portion has traces of gilding on the front surface. The glass boss is missing and about half of the metal element survives. It was originally oval in shape. The front of the brooch has an oval, lipped recess for the missing boss. Around this is a shallow framing channel with traces of stamped ring and dot decoration overlain with gilding. Between the channel and the edge of the brooch is a raised, flat topped band. There are further traces of gilding at the edge of the brooch beyond the framing band. At the back at the top of the oval is a curved catchplate for the missing pin. From this, extending longitudinally down the mid line of the back of the brooch, is a rectangular ridge which probably joined the hinge point for the pin on the missing part of the brooch. The back is undecorated. Dimensions: 20.01mm x 24.37mm x 9.48mm. Weight 3.49g.
