Report on Potential Treasure for HM Coroner BN/EM
2015 T293
Parish/County: Aldingham Area, Cumbria
A medieval silver annular brooch now broken into two pieces, with its pin, with four areas of engraved decoration on the upper surface. Each consists of four incised grooves, between which are narrower incised lines. The pin is plain with a wide flange at the neck, the edge of which is decorated with notches, and ends in a free-moving loop. The point of the loop is bevelled on the underside to fit over the frame and is not held by any constriction.
Non-destructive X-ray fluorescence analysis of the surface of the brooch indicated a silver content of approximately 92-95% with 3-5% copper, the rest being gold and lead. The granular contents of the larger engraved cells have the same composition so could be redeposited silver. The deposits in the smaller engraved cells are iron, most likely from the burial environment.
The brooch dates from the 13th to 15th centuries.
Dimensions: diameter 48 mm; thickness 3.5 mm;
length of pin 51 mm.
Weight: 13.3 grams (brooch), 6.4 grams (pin).
No BM interest.
In terms of age and as the object contains a minimum of 10% precious metal it qualifies as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996.
