MOUNT

Unique ID: CORN-2AACC8

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

Cast copper alloy umbonate harness mount or bridle boss. The mount is oval in plan with a moulded multifoil pattern with a central rectangular knop surrounded by eight circular knops to form of an eight-petalled flower, beyond which is another tier of four rectangular knops alternating with four circular knops. There is an oval of raised pellets at the base of the boss and then a border of sixteen circular knops with raised pellets within scrolls. Within this border, at either end of the boss, is a circular rivet hole that is 4 mm in diameter. These rivets, now missing, would have attached the boss to a leather strap.

Read (1988) illustrates examples of bridle bosses with a similar style of decoration on pages 180-1, nos.1224 &1230, which are dated from the 18th to the 19th century.

Bailey (1992) illustrates a similar example, with similar decortaion and two rivet holes within the border, on page 90, no.44, which is dated from the 18th century.
