An incomplete copper alloy Roman headstud brooch, dating to the second century AD. The brooch consists of the head, lug and the upper portion of the bow. The head of the brooch is comprised of rectangular wings, which form the lower portion of the lug. The lug is cylindrical and the remains of a corroded iron axis bar are visible at either end; there is a broken copper alloy pin which extends upwards from the centre of the lug. The bow of the brooch is rectangular in cross-section and gradually tapers towards the apex of the bow. The brooch has a raised rectangular panel, which extends upwards from the upper bow, which is decorated with transverse bands on the side facing the bow and has a series of vertical lines along the upper edge.
The bow is decorated with an incised vertical line on either side, which border the edges of the front of the bow. There is a raised tapering rectangle at the top of the bow, decorated with a series of transverse groove. This is connected to the raised 'headstud' which consists of a raised circular dome, with straight lines radiating from an inner circle with a further raised circle within. The reverse of the bow has a slight vertical ridge, creating two vertical facets. The bow is broken and is missing the lower portion of the bow, foot, catchplate and pin.
The brooch measures 28.2 mm in length, 24.1 mm wide, 13.9 mm thick and weighs 19.8 g.
