A worn and corroded Post Medieval cast lead alloy palm guard. The object is oval in shape and D shaped in section. The flat face has a shallow central depression whilst the curved face is thickened on one edge. These tools were used to protect the hand when forcing pointed tools through heavy duty textile or leather.
It measures 55mm long, 51.6mm wide and 51.1mm thick on thickest edge. It weighs 194 grams.
Because of the longevity of their simple form only a wide date range of circa 1500 -1800 AD can be assigned to these objects.
