MOUNT

Unique ID: HAMP-0B8CA9

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

An incomplete copper alloy object in two pieces, possibly a decorative shield clip or mount from a vessel and dating to the Late Iron Age or Roman period (300 BC - AD 100).
The object is U-shaped in cross-section and formed from a single piece of copper alloy, itself flat in cross-section, folded back on itself. The open ends are both incomplete, with worn damage. To one face there is a moulded rib along the complete edges. One rib continues beyond the worn break but has itself recently broken away from the main part of the object. A bright shiny copper colour can be seen on both sides of the break.
The mount widens from the fold to the damaged open ends (4.8mm thick min., 6.4mm thick max.; internally 2.7mm and 4.4mm).
The mount measures 9.5mm in length, 16.5mm in width and 6.4mm in max.depth. It weighs 2.04g.

Notes:

The function of this type of object is unclear although it appears to be some sort of strap fitting or decorative mount from a curved object, possibly from the edge of a bucket, tankard or vessel. For a similar example of the PAS database see SWYOR-1B7422, of which is written: A parallel is shown in Parfitt, K. (1995)' Iron Age burials from Mill Hill, Deal' London: British Museum Press and is identified as a Shield Clip. However, Jody Joy (British Museum) agrees that these objects could also be mounts from other objects with rounded edges, particularly mirrors or vessels, and especially tankards. Adam Gwilt of the National Museum of Wales has commented that some are decorated in the 'Celtic' La Tene style and suggests a date between the 1st century BC to the end of the 1st century AD, probably AD 20 - 80 (ie LIA and Roman Campaigning/Conquest period and soon after). He suggests that they are tankard mount and cites Corcoran, J.X.W.P. (1952) 'Tankards and Tankard Handles of the British Early Iron Age', Proceedings of the Prehistoric Society 18, 85-102.
