A near complete Medieval (1250-1450) copper alloy composite strap end, consisting of the two sheet plates sandwiching a forked spacer and retaining a fragment of organic material from the strap. Both sheet plates are sub-rectangular, having incurved attachment ends, straight longer edges and rounded ends with a central projecting knop. At the attachment end both plates have a central round grooved aperture, however the corner of one of the plates is missing. The forked spacer follows the length of the plates and also has a rounded end with a central projecting knop. The plates are held together at the attachment end by two copper alloy rivets, which also hold the fragment of organic material in place.
The strap end is 42.7mm long, 18.2mm wide, 9.2mm thick and weighs 9.01g. Several similar examples of composite strap ends from London are illustrated in Egan and Pritchard (1991), p.142, fig.93.
