A Roman Colchester derivative, Polden Hill (Mackreth Group 4, flat wing ends type) brooch (AD c. 80-120): The brooch is copper alloy and is incomplete. The wings are semi-cylindrical terminating with perforated wing caps. The wings are undecorated. At the junction of the wings and bow head there is an integral perforated lug which holds the copper alloy chord. The spring is coiled around the axis bar nine times. The pin is missing. The bowhead is only slightly hump-like in profile and is decorated with a deep 'Y' groove which continues down the bow, two lenticular bosses , blunt foot. On the reverse of the bow the catchplate starts at the mid point of the bow and is complete with a triangular openwork as decoration. The surface of the brooch has a matte light green patina. It measures 66.64mm long, 22.24mm wide across the wings and weighs 12.67g.

The brooch is a Polden Hill type. Bayley and Butcher (2004:160) comment that the distribution of Polden Hill brooches are concentrated in the West Midlands and suggest they date to AD 80 to 120. Hattat (1985) illustrates a very similar brooch, No. 376 and describes it as a Polden Hill variant.
