A sherd of Roman (45-400 AD) probably Severn Valley Ware Mortaria. The fabric is relatively soft and slightly powdery with a number of angular and sub angular quartz and grit inclusions. The fabric also contains considerable inclusions of mica / sand. The fabric colour is a mid buff orange and the outer colour is a lighter mid orange. The inner surface of the sherd has a large number or quartz (white and rose coloured) inclusions imbedded on the surface. This would have provided a grinding medium. The length is 52mm, the width is 40mm thickness 20mm and the weight 23.35g.
