Copper alloy brooch. Cast hinged trumpet derivative or bow and fantail brooch, Mackreth type TR 4.1a. A cylindrical case behind a small trumpet head with the stub of an integrally cast loop retains an axis bar and a cast pin; the ends or wings of the head have paired vertical mouldings at their ends. . The bow is waisted, and expands to meet a mid-bow lozengiform plate with a concentric ridge around a separate stud set centrally, with indeterminate features to either side of its edge. The stud bears radial grooves, now smoothed by wear, and was secured by tabs projecting from its back and passing through the centre of the plate to be splayed against its back. Below the plate, there is a collar above a triangular bordered fantail foot with a folded catch plate behind it. The triangular plate is recessed as if to receive enamel, though no trace of colorant remains. Suggested date: Early Roman, 80-160.
