An incomplete copper alloy double loop annular buckle of the Late Medieval to Post Medieval period, dating from AD 1350 - AD 1650.
The buckle consists of the frame with an complete central bar. The pin has been lost in antiquity. The buckle is sub circular in plan and D shaped in cross section. The central bar has a sub square cross section. The external edges of the frame have been bevelled, giving them a semi circular appearance. The top of the buckle has a curved edge, while the base of the buckle has an almost flat edge. The back of the buckle frame is plain.
The buckle measures 23.2 mm in diameter and has a thickness of 3.3 mm. It weighs 3.6 g.
The buckle is a dark brown in colour with traces of green patina. It has an uneven surface patina. Abrasion caused by movement whilst within the plough soil may have resulted in the loss of some of the surface detail.
Other examples of this type of buckle can be found in Whitehead (2003), page 45, No 251 - 258 and a number have been recorded on the database, including WMID-662E87.
