An incomplete copper alloy Roman brooch, a Colchester derivative that Mackreth (2001:91) calls the 'East Midlands Enamelled' type (type 9.b). The brooch has wings that full encase the pin bar; these brooches are hinged not sprung. On this example the pin is missing. The bow is curved and tapers both in section and in width towards the foot, which is very narrow and has a bend outwards for the catchplate, most of which survives. Towards the top of the bow are two recessed cells for enamel, but directly into the bow itself; red enamel survives in the lower notch. There is faint ribbed ornament down the sides and the centre of the brooch, but the main decoration is restricted to the two enamelled cells. One example illustrated in Mackreth (2011: Plate 60 no. 2667) is the closest parallel to the example recorded here; they are dated from the late first to mid second century AD.
