An incomplete copper alloy lace chape or tag, of medieval dating (AD 1300 to AD 1500).
The chape is made from a single piece of rectangular sectioned metal which has been rolled to form a tapering tube with a butted seam, open at both ends. The lower end is incomplete. The chape is undecorated and no attachment holes are present.
The chape is 73.8 mm long, 8.1 mm in diameter at the top tapering to 5.6 mm at the base, 0.8 mm thick and weighs 8.0 g.
The chape is a mid green colour, with an uneven surface patina. Abrasion, caused by movement whilst within the plough soil, has resulted in a loss of some of the original surface detail.
According to Egan and Pritchard (2002, p.282), the length of the object (over 40mm) means that its function is uncertain, whereas similar objects less than 40mm in length are certainly lace chapes. Several similar large lace tags or chapes have been recorded on the PAS database, including: YORYM-877191; LIN-DD4E68; YORYM-6BEA93; YORYM-6C7A07 and NLM-7C0D1B. All are considered to be Medieval in dating (AD 1300 to AD 1500).
