Object type certainty: Certain

A large post-medieval copper alloy crotal bell, dating to the 17th century. The bell is formed of two hemispheres with a thick median band. The upper hemisphere is decorated with a series of elongated rays or lobes. Two sound holes are set within this. A complete, integrally cast rectangular loop extends from the top. The lower hemisphere is similarly decorated, and contains two sound holes joined by a channel. A shield motif is visible at the base; this contains a cross.

A crotal with such a distinguishing mark can be found illustrated in Bailey (1995, 40-41; ref. 20) and is dated to the 17th century AD. See also HAMP-F5B27, and LIN-597902.
