An incomplete copper alloy, penannular brooch, of Roman dating (AD 43 to AD 410).
Around 25% of the probable penannular brooch is present, consisting only of one terminal and a small amount of the ring. The terminal consists of a double knob, with a recess between. The ring has a sub circular cross section and curves away from the terminal.
It measures 21.9 mm in length, 13.1 mm wide and 5.6 mm thick. It weighs 1.6 g.
The penannular brooch is a mid green colour, with an uneven surface patina. Abrasion, caused by movement whilst within the plough soil, has resulted in a loss of some of the original surface detail.
Penannular brooches with similar style terminals have been recorded on the PAS database, including: BH-4D0AB3 and LVPL-CCD9F4. These are considered to be Roman in dating and classified as a Fowler type A4. Anna Booth (pers. comm.) comments that most brooches of this class are probably 1st or 2nd century in date, although they do continue into the 3rd and 4th centuries. Their distribution appears to be weighted towards the south-west, brooches with similar 3-disc terminals having been found in an antiquarian collection from Cirencester, Gloucestershire; Goledges Field, Caerleon, Monmouthshire; Corsham, Wiltshire; and Wroxeter, Shropshire (all unpublished).
