A complete, bent copper alloy, hinged Colchester derivative Polden Hill (flat wing ends, hinged, West Midlands) type, dating AD 80-120. The head is formed of a long cylindrical tube (27.4mm long) which holds the copper alloy axis bar. It has a large slot where the pin curls around the bar, and two large rounded terminals decorated with a series of grooves. The rest of the head is decorated with vertical mouldings. The thin bow arches gently from the centre of the head and tapers down to the base (width tapers from 5.4mm to 2.3mm). The upper half of the bow is also decorated with vertical mouldings and grooves.
To the reverse the triangular catchplate extends for c.20mm of the length of the foot and 11.2mm outwards. It has an openwork triangle and a curved lower edge to receive the pin. The pin is intact but severely bent. It has a circular section and tapers to a point, measuring 34.8mm in total length.
The bow of the brooch is bent at a 45 degree angle to the right. The brooch now measures 38.4mm in length, c.37mm in (bent) width and is c.26mm thick. It weighs 11.76g.
Similar Polden Hill type brooches are illustrated in Hattatt (2000), p.300-1, fig.159-60, in particular no.376.
