A complete lead or lead alloy unifaced token of the Late Medieval to Post Medieval period, dating to AD 1400 - AD 1800.
The token is sub oval in shape and rectangular in cross section. The obverse depicts a segmented design made up of raised lines making up a plain cross with an X on top, the whole decoration is surrounded by a raised border. (Powell Type: 3 possibly). The reverse is undecorated, apart from a raised border around the edge.
The token measures 17.0 mm in diameter, and has a thickness of 3.1 mm. It weighs 4.9 g.
The token is a mid to light brown in colour and has an even surface patina. Abrasion caused by movement whilst within the plough soil may have resulted in the loss of some of the original surface detail.
Lead tokens are a frequently occurring find, with a variety of different designs. Tokens like this, were used as tallies or as replacement low denomination coinage during the Medieval and Post Medieval periods. Other similar examples of this type of token have been recorded on the database including, WMID-49AE1D, WMID-C99891 and WMID-06C80C.
