Fragment of a cast lead alloy (pewter?) spoon of probable later medieval or post medieval date (1450-1650).

The fragment consists of the lower part of the stem or handle and the top of the bowl of the spoon. The fragment is broadly sub-rectangular in plan, with the handle being elliptical in section and the bowl having a concave sub-rectangular (C shape) section. The bowl measures 16.2mm in length, 20.9mm width, and is 2.1mm thick. The handle measures 18.1mm in length, 9.6mm width and is 5.8mm thick. The spoon fragment weighs 8.37 grams.

There is no decoration on the spoon, although the reverse has a series of sub-rectangular raised panels which add strength to the weakest part of the spoon; where the bowl is worked from the stem. The fragment is of a mid-brown grey colour with an even slightly powdery patina. The broken edges of both the bowl and the stem are angular and relatively fresh, with no patina. This suggests that the damage occurred recently.

Due to the size of the fragment finding parallels has proved problematic. Therefore, a large date range 1450 - 1650 AD has been adopted.
