An incomplete copper-alloy strap-end, dating from the Medieval period.
The surviving attachment plate has slightly damaged, straight sides which converge towards the bottom. Its edges angle downwards; this feature, in conjunction with the now-missing backplate, would have created a strap socket. Two copper-alloy rivets survive in situ and would have served to secure the strap in place. Immediately beneath the attachment, the strap-end narrows into the neck and outward-facing head of a zoomorphic creature. The height of the head increases towards the bottom and a series of incised grooves have been used to create stylised facial features.
Length: 28.2mm; width: 7.3mm; thickness: 4.1mm. Weight: 1.3g.
Parallels for this strap-end include PAS record BH-C52097 (Offley, Hertfordshire) and BH-B5EF33 (Great Billington, Central Bedfordshire). Such strap-ends probably date from the late 11th to 12th century.
