An incomplete copper alloy trumpet derivative brooch of Roman date. The head of the brooch is comprised of tubular wings the reverse of which act as a double lug hinge mechanism which retains the axis bar though the pin no longer remains. The front of the wings tapers to a steeply curved D-sectioned bow with integral flattened circular panel. The panel is decorated with a central circular recess which retains traces of red enamel and is surrounded by 10 smaller circular recesses. Alternate panels retain blue enamel. A D-sectioned, rectangular lower bow extends from the base of the circular panel and is very worn. The worn remains of the catchplate projects from the reverse of the bow.
The metal has a dark brown patina and is worn. The brooch is 39.7mm long, 19.3mm wide, 4.9mm thick and weighs 11.8g.
Similar examples are illustrated in Hattatt, p.330, fig.189 and are dated to the 1st - 2nd Century AD.
