BUCKLE

Unique ID: LVPL783

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

Rectangular frame with five deep rabbets on the outer edge, with two lengthways grooves with a transverse groove between on one side of the thicker areas. Recessed bar with knop at either end.The pin is missing.
A buckle of similar form is published in Egan & Pritchard (1991, No. 443) but has a central bar. It is dated to the late 13th-14th centuries. It does not appear that this particular example is a broken half of the same. Whitehead (1996) includes another example with a central bar (No. 476) but dates it to the 15th century and suggests it may be a buckle for armour.

Class: Cassels type 1.8G
