Incomplete copper alloy scabbard chape of probable Medieval date. Length 27mm, width 25mm and 3.5mm thick. Weight 4.03g.

Viewing the front side, which is decorated, the right hand side, including the upward projecting extension, is complete. The left hand side is broken and missing. The break is ragged but appears to be old. The reverse side is partially broken. Decoration at the front is in the form of four grooves which create four, roughly horizontal, linear zones. The lower zone is occupied by six narrow oblique grooves. Due to the position of the breaks it is not possible to determine whether the chape is a folded or a cast type. It has a mid-green coloured patina overall.

Notes:

The chape may have belonged to a small scabbard for a dagger. However it could be considered whether the piece is a belt chape.
